Freebo & Alice Howe: Freebo is a genuine folk, rock and blues icon who, after over 40 years of recording and touring with many of the great artists of our time (Bonnie Raitt 10 years, CSN, Maria Muldaur, John Mayall, Ringo Starr, Dr. John, Neil Young, & many more) is regarded as one of the most gifted singer-songwriters of today. He has appeared on Saturday Night Live, The Muppet Show, The Midnight Special, and in concert with the legendary Spinal Tap. At once timeless and original, Boston singer-songwriter Alice Howe joins a soulful, impeccably tuned voice with crafted poetry. A lifelong songwriter, Alice's musical sensibility lies in '60s folk and '70s Southern California songwriters, with comparisons drawn to the pure, distilled sounds of Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell. As a performer, Alice is sure-footed and captivating, familiar to her audience from the very first song.

Dusty Strings Music School
Workshop #1: The Art of Accompanying Vocalists, 12:15pm - 2:15pm Learn how to accompany yourself or others on almost any song, whether it's guitar, bass, keyboard, or other acoustic instrument. The art of acoustic accompaniment includes listening, awareness, sensitivity, and the ability to add complexity while not distracting from the singer. Explore these elements and more, whether you're a solo singer/songwriter, duo, trio, or sideman, and leave with tools to make your song - or anyone else's song - sound better both live and on recordings. Taught in a master class format, gentle critiques can be given to anyone willing. For all levels. Instruments encouraged though not required. Singers welcome, too! http://store.dustystrings.com/c-78-multi-instrument-classes.aspx
Workshop #2: Two-Hour Songwriters' Retreat, 2:45 PM - 4:45 PM Do you sometimes feel like others just don't understand your song? Tired of listening to others tell you how it should be? Or are you simply fearing the blank page? Come to this one-day class where you'll not only find inspiration, but tools, tips, and tricks to help nurture your creativity. Explore methods for working through writer's block; clarifying the intro, verse, chorus, bridge, and outro of your song; arranging and setting your song; and using alternative chords to make your song sound more interesting. If you're not (yet!) a musician, learn basic music terms to make communicating with musicians and singers easier. Bring something you're working on, or an idea you'd like to work on, as well as a notebook, pencil, and instrument if you like. Note: while this class is about songwriting, it's open to anyone who wants to explore creative writing! http://store.dustystrings.com/c-74-songwriting-classes.aspx
Reserve in advance, $40 each.

FREEBO, MAXWELL, & HOWE are three singer-songwriters who, out of their shared love of harmony singing, have joined together for several performances in the Midwest and East Coast. Freebo is an award-winning singer-songwriter who is best known as a world-renowned bassist (Bonnie Raitt 10 years, CSN, Ringo Starr, Maria Muldaur, Dr. John, and many others). 2016 New Folk Finalist Kirsten Maxwell is known for her “clear soprano [that] rings out in a way that would make Judy Collins and Joan Baez approve” (John Platt, WFUV). With her soulful, impeccably tuned voice, Alice Howe is “up there with the very best of Mary Chapin Carpenter, Gretchen Peters and Dar Williams” (Folking.com). Her song “Homeland Blues” debuted as #1 on the April 2017 Folk-DJ chart and the EP, “You’ve Been Away So Long,” came in as the #7 album of the year. FREEBO, MAXWELL, & HOWE promise a memorable evening of music bringing together a folk-rock-blues legend and two young artists becoming well known in the national folk scene.
