500 Miles

Single (2022)

Alice Howe brings her soulful, impeccably-tuned voice to the classic “500 Miles,” appearing on the new compilation album Americana Railroad, a tribute to the rich history of train songs in American music. The record, released via BMG/Renew Records in June 2022, features 19 tracks from artists such as John Fogerty, Dustbowl Revival, Dave Alvin, Dom Flemons, and others.

Produced and arranged by Alice’s creative partner Freebo, who also played fretless bass and acoustic guitar on the track, this lush reimagining of “500 Miles” is a far cry from well-known versions of the song that listeners may remember from the ‘60s. Supporting Alice's emotional vocals is a sensitive yet driving track featuring Jeff Fielder on electric guitar, Dave Pearlman on pedal steel, and John Molo on drums.

Lyrics

If you miss the train I'm on, you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles
A hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles

Now I'm one, now I'm two, now I'm three, now I'm four
Now I'm 500 miles from my home
500 miles, 500 miles, 500 miles, 500 miles
I'm 500 miles from my home

Not a shirt on my back, not a penny to my name
And I can't go a-home this a-way
This a-away, this a-way, this a-way, this a-way
No I can't go a-home this a-way

If you miss the train I'm on, you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles
